Notifications not arriving?

Missing notifications almost always come down to one of four things: you are signed out on that phone, notifications are off for Kunbaa in the phone's settings, a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is holding them, or, on Android, battery saving has stopped Kunbaa in the background. Work through the checks below in order.

1. Check you are signed in on this phone

Kunbaa sends notifications only to a phone that is signed in to the app. Signing out takes that phone off your notifications, so a phone you signed out of, or a new phone you have not signed in on yet, gets nothing. Open the Kunbaa app on the phone and sign in with your usual email address. Calls ring on every device you are signed in on.

2. Turn on notifications for Kunbaa in your phone's settings

Kunbaa asks before it sends notifications, with a line about why. If you chose Not now, or said no to the phone’s own question, switch them on in the phone’s settings:

  • iPhone: Settings, then Notifications, then Kunbaa. Switch on Allow Notifications, and check that the lock screen and banners are on.
  • Android: Settings, then Apps, then Kunbaa, then Notifications. Switch them on, and check the categories underneath: Calls, Family chat, Family events and Family tasks. The menu names vary a little between phone makers.

3. Check Focus or Do Not Disturb

A Focus on iPhone (Sleep, Work, Personal and the rest) or Do Not Disturb on Android silences notifications while it is on. Check whether one is on now or switches on by itself on a schedule. To let Kunbaa through, add it to the apps allowed in that Focus (on iPhone, Settings, then Focus) or to the exceptions in Do Not Disturb (on Android, in the phone’s sound or notification settings).

4. On Android, let Kunbaa run in the background

Some Android phones stop apps in the background to save battery, and an app that has been stopped cannot show a notification. In the phone’s settings, open Apps, then Kunbaa, then Battery, and choose the option that lets it run freely, often called Unrestricted or Don’t optimise. Turn off any battery saver or app sleeping list that includes Kunbaa. The names differ between phone makers.

If calls do not ring on your locked Android phone, open Kunbaa’s Settings: when the phone is holding full-screen calls back, a row reads Let calls ring full screen. Tap it and switch it on.

5. Check you have not muted the person

Muting a relative is one-way and quiet: their messages and calls no longer reach you, and they are not told. If one person’s messages never arrive, open Settings in the app, then Privacy and account, then Muted members, and unmute them if you want to hear from them again.

Nothing is lost while notifications are off

Notifications only point you to things. Everything is still in Kunbaa: open Notifications (the bell) in the app for invites, replies and family activity. If calls connect but have problems, see calls not connecting.

Questions families ask

I said Not now when Kunbaa asked about notifications. How do I turn them on?

In your phone's settings. On iPhone, open Settings, then Notifications, then Kunbaa, and switch on Allow Notifications. On Android, open Settings, then Apps, then Kunbaa, then Notifications, and switch them on. Once you have said no to the phone's own question, the phone may not let Kunbaa ask again, so its settings are the sure place to change it.

Notifications stopped when I moved to a new phone.

Each phone has to be signed in and allowed on its own. Sign in to Kunbaa on the new phone with the same email address, and allow notifications when Kunbaa asks, or in the phone's settings. A phone you have signed out of no longer gets your notifications.

Calls don't ring on my locked Android phone.

Newer Android phones can hold back full-screen calls. If Kunbaa's Settings shows Let calls ring full screen, tap it and switch it on, so a call wakes your locked phone like a phone call. Also check that the Calls category is on under the phone's notification settings for Kunbaa.

Can I turn off some kinds of notification and keep others?

On Android, yes: the phone's notification settings for Kunbaa list Calls, Family chat, Family events and Family tasks, and you can switch each one on or off. On iPhone, Kunbaa's notifications are switched on or off together in Settings. To stop hearing from one person, mute them instead.

If I mute a relative, do they know?

No. Muted members are not notified, and you can unmute anyone at any time in Settings, under Privacy and account, then Muted members.

Did I miss anything while notifications were off?

No. Everything still waits inside Kunbaa: open Notifications (the bell) in the app to see invites, replies and family activity, and the chats and the wall are where they always were.

I've checked everything and it still doesn't work.
