Joining your family on Kunbaa

Open the invite link your relative sent you and sign in with the email address it was sent to. You join their family space straight away, free, and see the family's tree and posts. If the link was shared without an address, the person who invited you lets you in first.

1. Open the invite link

Your relative sent it by email, or by a message such as WhatsApp. Open it on your phone or your computer. An invite is personal: it is a key to your family’s private space, so keep it to yourself.

Installed Kunbaa from the store first? Open the app and tap I have an invite link. You do not need the link itself: once you sign in, the invites waiting for your address are shown to you.

2. Sign in with the email address the invite was sent to

Sign in with a code sent to that email address, or with Google or Facebook on kunbaa.com, Google in the app, or Apple on an iPhone. If you use Google, Facebook or Apple, pick the account that uses the address your invite was sent to. With Sign in with Apple, choose Share My Email: Apple’s private relay address will not match the invite.

Signed in with a different account? Kunbaa tells you the invite is for another account, shows a hint of the address it was sent to, and offers Switch account. More on codes and devices: signing in, codes and devices.

3. Tap Join

You see who invited you and to which family, with Join right under it (Join family on kunbaa.com). Your relative may have put your date of birth on the family tree already. If so, Kunbaa shows it and asks whether it is right, so you can confirm it or change it.

  • An invite sent to your email address: you are in at once. Your relative gets a notice that you joined.
  • A link shared without an address: the button reads Ask to join. Anyone holding a link like that could open it, so your relative, or another admin of the family, lets you in first. You get a notification when you are in.

4. Look around, then add your part when you are ready

You join a family that already exists, so there is nothing to set up first. Open the family wall to see what everyone has shared, find yourself on the family tree, and add your branch, your photos and your stories when you are ready. The family space is private: no public profiles, and only the family can see it.

You can do all of this on kunbaa.com in a web browser. Chats and voice and video calls are in the Kunbaa mobile app, so install it when you can and sign in with the same address.

If the invite has expired or does not work

Invite links work for 14 days. If yours has run out, or says it no longer works, ask whoever invited you to send it again. The new link works straight away, and it replaces any older one, so always use the newest. A family space is invite-only, so the new invite has to come from someone already in it.

Questions families ask

Do I have to pay to join?

No. Joining is free for every relative, and nobody asks you for a card to join. The tree, the wall, chat, calls and events are all there on the free plan.

Which email address should I sign in with?

The one your invite was sent to. If you use Google or Facebook, choose the account that uses that address. If you use Sign in with Apple, choose Share My Email, because Apple's private relay address will not match the invite. If you are signed in with another account, Kunbaa says the invite is for another account and offers Switch account.

Invite links work for 14 days. Ask whoever invited you to send it again; the new link works straight away. If you were sent more than one, use the newest, because a new link replaces the old one.

A newer invite may have replaced it, or it was already used. Ask whoever invited you to send it again. If it says someone else asked to join with this link first, ask them for an invite of your own.

Open Kunbaa, tap I have an invite link, and sign in with the email address the invite was sent to. Invites waiting for that address appear right after you sign in, on kunbaa.com and in the app, so you can tap Join without the link.

Do I need to make my own family tree?

No. You join a family that already exists, with your place on the tree waiting for you. Add your branch, photos and stories when you are ready.

Can I join on the website?

Yes. Open the link in a web browser, sign in on kunbaa.com and join there. Chats and calls are in the Kunbaa mobile app, so install it too when you can, and sign in with the same address.

Can my children join?

Kunbaa accounts are for people aged 18 and over. An adult in your family can add younger relatives to the tree, so they are still part of it.
