Permissions: what admins, editors and viewers can do

Most families have two or three keepers and a lot of lookers. Permissions let the keepers add and fix, and let everyone else enjoy what arrives. This guide shows you where they live and how to change them.

The three levels

Admin runs the family. Invites people, sets permissions, answers access requests, manages the plan. Whoever created the family is its admin.
Can post — an editor. Adds to the wall and to the tree, invites relatives, starts chats. On an invite this level is called Editor.
View only — a viewer. Looks, reacts and comments. Right for a grandparent who wants the photos to arrive and never wants to press the wrong thing. On an invite this level is called Viewer.

The three switches

Under the level sit three switches an admin sets for each person. They let you give a viewer a little more, or take one thing away from an editor, without changing their level.

Post on the family wall — share photos, memories and announcements with everyone.
Add people to the tree — add relatives and invite them to Kunbaa. This one is an editor’s job, so turning it on for a viewer also switches them to Can post.
Message family members — start chats and group conversations.

Step 1: See what a relative can do

Tap your photo at the top of the app to open the menu.
Tap Members.
Tap a relative. Their profile opens. If you are an admin, a Permissions card sits under their household, with their level as a pill — Admin, Can post or View only — and the three switches under it.

Step 2: Change it (admins)

Tap the level pill to move someone between Can post and View only. Moving someone down asks you to confirm.
Flip any of the three switches.
That is all. Changes take effect straight away, on every device the person is signed in on.

Step 3: Set it before someone joins

You do not have to fix permissions after the fact. Every invite has a short Before we send it step followed by What can they do?: pick Editor or Viewer, switch posting, adding people and messaging on or off, then Send invite. The person arrives with exactly that access. See inviting your first relative.

Step 4: Ask for more (viewers)

If you try something your level does not allow, Kunbaa tells you: Your family’s admin hasn’t enabled this for you. Tap Request access, add a note if you want, and it goes to the family’s admins. They see it under Requests, approve or decline it, and you are told either way.

The Connected Members page in the website dashboard has the same levels, the same three switches, a Request access button for members, and the Requests list for admins.

What permissions do not change

What someone can see is the family’s content, narrowed only by the audience the author chose on a post — Everyone, Extended family or Household. Muting and reporting are always available to everyone, whatever their level.

Questions families ask

Which level am I?

Whoever created the family is its admin. Everyone else arrives with the level chosen when they were invited — Editor (shown as Can post afterwards) or Viewer (View only). Open Members from the menu and look at your own row, or ask the person who invited you.

Can I change my own permissions?

No. Ask another admin of the family. An admin can change anyone else's level and switches, and cannot be narrowed by another admin's switch.

I am View only. How do I add my cousins?

Try to add them — Kunbaa says your family's admin hasn't enabled this for you and offers Request access. Tap it, add a note if you like, and the admins see it under Requests. They approve or decline it, and you are told either way.

Does my level change what I can see?

No. Permissions are about doing — posting, adding people, messaging. What you can see is the family's content, narrowed only by the audience an author chose on a post.

Can I set permissions on the website?

Yes. The Connected Members page in the website dashboard has the same levels and switches, and the same Requests list for admins.
