Marking a relative as passed away
A family tree holds the people who are gone as carefully as the people who are here. Recording it takes one switch, with or without a date.
Recording it
Open the person’s card on the tree, or their profile, and tap Edit details. Beside the death date is a switch: Passed away, date unknown. Either enter the date you know — a full date or just the year — or turn the switch on and leave the date empty. Save, and the card is marked. You can add or refine the date any time.
You can do the same when you first add someone: the add-person sheet has the same date field and the same switch, so a great-grandmother can be added as passed in one go.
What changes
- On the tree, their card is marked gently and shows the dates the family knows.
- In chat and invites, they leave the list of relatives you can message or invite. Kunbaa will not offer a chat with someone who has passed, and an invite to them is refused.
- Everything else stays. Their photos, the posts and memories they are tagged in, their place on the tree and the story on their card are kept exactly as they were. Nothing about them is deleted.
Correcting a mistake
Open the card, tap Edit details, turn the switch off and clear the date. They are back among the living at once — on the tree, in chat and in the invite list.
Ancestors from long ago
If a relative was born more than 110 years ago and nothing is recorded, Kunbaa treats them as passed — so nobody is offered a chat with a great-great-grandfather born in 1890. Recording the death, even with the date unknown, makes it explicit and lets the card show what the family knows.
Questions families ask
I don't know the date. Can I still record it?
Yes. Turn on Passed away, date unknown and leave the date empty. You can add the date later, or a year on its own, and the card updates.
What changes when someone is marked as passed away?
Their card on the tree is marked gently, they leave the list of people you can invite or message, and the family sees them as passed. Everything else stays: their photos, the posts they are tagged in, their place in the tree and the story on their card.

Can a relative who has passed have an account?
No, and their card doesn't need one. A person on the tree is not the same as an account; the card holds their name, dates, photos and story, and the family keeps it.
Who can do this?
Anyone who can add to the tree — admins and anyone with Can post. If you are View only, ask an admin or request access.
