First-time guide 2 of 7

Build your tree: parents, partners and children

The tree is the spine of Kunbaa. Every photo, post, event and chat hangs off the people on it — and so do your household and your extended family, which decide who sees what. Build it one card at a time.

Where the tree is

Tap the Tree tab at the bottom of the app. It opens at home: your parents’ row with you ringed and centred, your siblings beside you, your children below. Tap any card to open that person; press and hold a card and a ring of actions blooms around it.

Step 1: Add your parents

  1. Press and hold your own card and tap Add. (Tapping the card and choosing Add a relative does the same.)
  2. Under Close family, tap Mother. Type her name. A birth date is optional, but it puts her birthday on the family calendar.
  3. Tap Add member. She appears above you, connected.
  4. Do the same for Father.

Step 2: Add your partner and children

  1. From your own card again, tap Add and choose Spouse or Partner. They appear beside you.
  2. Tap Add once more and choose Daughter or Son for each child. They appear below you, joined to both of you.

That is your household: your parents, your partner and your children. Kunbaa reads it straight off the tree and uses it in two places — as the smallest audience you can choose for a post, and as a family group in Chats that keeps itself up to date.

Step 3: Grow outwards from each card

The tree grows from whoever you are looking at. Open your mother’s card and add her parents, sisters and brothers. Open your partner’s card and add their side. Under Wider family you will find grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, step-parents and in-laws, so the tree can hold the family you actually have.

Two generations up and two down from you, with everyone’s partners, is your extended family — grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren. It is the middle audience for a post and, once enough of them have joined, a family group in Chats too.

Step 4: Move around

Press and hold any card: View from redraws the tree from that person’s place, Parents and Children step a generation up or down, and Profile, Edit, Invite, Message and More do what they say. Pinch and pan to move around.

Step 5: Relatives who have passed

Open their card and tap Edit. Add a date of death, or turn on Passed away, date unknown if nobody remembers it. Their card is marked gently, and they stay on the tree where they belong.

Fixing a mistake

Open the card, tap Edit, change the name, dates or relationship, and save. Everyone sees the correction — it is one shared tree. If two branches have been building separately, ask us at support@kunbaa.com and we will help bring them together.

On the website

Family Tree in the website dashboard shows the same tree with the same add-a-relative steps. If your tree already lives in another program, the import guide brings it across without retyping.

Questions families ask

Do relatives need an account to be on the tree?

No. Anyone can be a person on the tree — grandparents, children, relatives who have passed. An account is only for someone who will open Kunbaa themselves; when you invite them, their account joins the card you already made.

What if I don't know a grandparent's name?

Add what you know and come back. When a relative you add needs someone who isn't on the tree yet — a cousin needs an aunt or uncle — Kunbaa puts an unnamed placeholder in the gap for anyone in the family to name later.

Can I add my partner's side?

Yes. Add your partner from your own card, then open your partner's card and add their parents, siblings and grandparents from there. The tree grows in every direction.

Who is in my household?

Your parents, your partner (or partners) and your children, as recorded on the tree — the people in your house, or the ones who once were. Siblings, grandparents and in-laws are not in it; they are in your extended family.

Who can add people?

Anyone with Can post access, or a viewer whose admin has switched on Add people to the tree. An admin can keep a relative on View only if they'd rather just look.

Can I build the tree on the website?

Yes. Family Tree in the website dashboard has the same add-a-relative steps, and it is the same tree — a person added on one shows on the other straight away.
